Main Segment: Net Neutrality Deep Dive

Definition and Principles

• Net neutrality: ISPs enable access to all content without favoring/blocking
• Free and open internet where ISPs just provide access
• Current dystopian vision: internet packages like cable TV
• Pay extra for search engines, entertainment, social media access

Historical Context

• FCC regulated internet with net neutrality principles since 1990s
• 2014: Verizon sued FCC, court ruled no authority over Title I utilities
• 2015: Obama administration reclassified internet as Title II utility
• 3.7 million public comments supporting reclassification
• Trump's FCC Chairman Ajit Pai wants to reverse to Title I

Title II Utility Classification

• Prohibits unjust discrimination in services
• Cannot give preference to particular persons/localities
• $6,000 fine per violation, $300 per day continuation
• Same protections as telephone, sewage, public transportation

ISP Violations History (2005-2013)

• Madison River blocked Vonage VoIP service (2005)
• Comcast secretly blocked peer-to-peer technologies (2005-2007)
• Tellus blocked labor strike website, affecting 766 other sites (2005)
• AT&T forced Apple to block Skype/FaceTime (2007-2012)
• Windstream hijacked Google searches to their portal (2010)
• MetroPCS blocked all video streaming except YouTube (2011)
• Multiple ISPs redirected search queries for referral fees (2011)
• AT&T/Sprint/Verizon blocked Google Wallet, promoted their "ISIS" service (2011-2013)
• Verizon blocked tethering apps to force $20 monthly fee (2012)
• Verizon lawyer admitted they'd explore paid prioritization without rules (2013)

The $200 Billion Broadband Scandal

• 1990s: Government gave $200-500 billion to telecom companies
• Promise: wire entire US with fiber optic cables by 2006
• $4,000-7,000 per household in tax incentives/breaks
• Companies took money, never built promised infrastructure
• US now has among world's slowest, most expensive internet
• No state audits, no accountability, no refunds

Current Threats: T-Mobile "Binge On"

• Appears beneficial: streaming without data cap usage
• Actually creates two-tier internet system
• Established services get preferential treatment
• New competitors can't afford to participate
• Strangles innovation, entrenches existing monopolies

Corporate Manipulation

• AT&T claimed to support net neutrality on Day of Action
• Same company that blocked FaceTime, sued FCC over Title II
• Spending millions lobbying against net neutrality rules
• "Binge On" marketed as consumer benefit, actually anti-competitive

Call to Action

• Visit battleforthenet.com to contact FCC and Congress
• Fill out form with personal info to submit opposition
• Importance of public engagement and awareness
• "Price of freedom is eternal vigilance"
