3D Printer Purchase & Initial Projects
- Recently bought new 3D printer after bad experience with old one years ago
- New printers: not expensive, decent quality
- Benefits: online models available, print anything you think of
- Personal satisfaction solving pointless problems with custom solutions
- Monitor lamp fitting issue - 3D printed custom version
- Contact lens storage box with divider - couldn't find commercially, printed custom
- Surfboard wall mount - perfect fit solution
- Organized shelves with custom printed organizers
- Felt "pretty done" with personal projects
Inspiration for Public Projects
- Saw people printing stuff for public spaces online
- Initial concern: Japan has no trash on streets, leaving plastic might be problematic
- Decision: temporary installations (max 1-2 days), then retrieve
- Challenge: create 3 different public prints
Project 1: Tiny Street Mirrors
- Inspiration: street mirrors everywhere in Tokyo for sharp corners/turns
- Japan loves tiny things - decided to make miniature version
- Modeling surprisingly easy, good results
- First attempt failed: fell off after couple hours due to heat affecting plastic
- Second version: added rubber band for better adhesion
- Placed in 3 different spots around Tokyo for 1 day
- Observed one person (kitten) laughing and smiling at it
- Mother's feedback: suggested making even tinier version for snails/bugs
- Created ridiculously tiny mirror for insects
- Result: tiny mirror success
Project 2: Beckoning Cat Hats at Gotokuji Temple
- Temple background: origin of beckoning cat (maneki-neko), symbol of Japan
- Temple filled with cat statues for good fortune and money
- Downloaded Blender for first time, spent hours learning
- Created cute thick cat model, considered strong and long versions
- Realization: couldn't leave custom cats at temple (inappropriate)
- Solution: noticed people make hats for existing temple cats
- Made 3D model of actual temple cat
- Designed cowboy hat using subtraction modeling technique
- Results:
- Perfect fit cowboy hat for custom cat
- Made party hat for "Mercy" as well
- Very pleased with cute results
- Temple etiquette reminder: be respectful, people come to pray
Project 3: Solar-Powered Miniature Street Lamp
- Inspiration: every street leading to Tokyo stations has unique street lamp designs
- Most complex project - pushed all learned skills
- Technical challenges:
- 3D printing limitations at tiny scale
- Originally planned 2-3 parts, ended up ~12 parts
- Lots of trial and error to print all components
- Solar power addition:
- Found tiny solar panels
- Required battery power and light sensor
- Needed soldering skills (hated it, felt needed 4 more arms)
- Found circuit design from "Indian YouTube"
- Hid all wiring inside lamp structure
- Installation & testing:
- Rushed to install before dark
- Discovered had white lights (didn't match other lamps)
- Light sensor worked properly
- Public reaction observation:
- Spied on people walking by
- Zero reactions - everyone walked past without noticing
- People focused on phones, didn't look up
Community Response & Takedown
- Left lamp for 24 hours
- Posted on Instagram for people to check out
- Unexpected result: people left notes as messages
- Gathering too much attention after social media post
- Met group of people who waited to see creator:
- One person waited 3 hours
- Group happy to link up together
- Someone offered tomato juice to waiting people
- Notes included references to old "King of the web" voting
- Takedown process:
- Collected all notes
- Ensured area 100% back to normal
- Appreciated sweet messages from community
