1930s Referred Pain Experiments by Ward and Carmichael

• Edward Carmichael and Herbert Ward investigated referred pain in 1930s
• Referred pain: injury to internal organ causes pain elsewhere in body
  • Classic example: heart attack causes arm pain
• Same theory applies to referred itch - scratching one area causes itching elsewhere
• Scientists used themselves as test subjects due to lack of resources/volunteers

Experimental Procedure

• One researcher removed pants, pulled testicles forward with fingers
• Placed scale pan on top of testicles
• Gradually added weights to pan while recording sensations
• Tested one testicle at a time for scientific accuracy
• Injected local anesthetic into testicles to continue experiment when pain became severe

Results from Right Testicle Observations

• 300 grams: slight discomfort in right groin
• 650 grams: severe pain on whole right side of body
• Subject reported "sickening character" pain across entire back
• Confirmed referred pain phenomenon exists for testicular trauma
• Similar to groin kick causing vomiting and gut pain that spreads upward
